Alconza delivers the 2 permanent magnet propulsion motors to the vessel of the year, MS Medstraum
During the SMM trade fair held in Hamburg early September 2022, the winner for the Ship of the Year award was announced; the MS Medstraum. This vessel was developed in the so-called TrAM project, a European initiative for the design and manufacture of the first 100% electric, zero-emission fast ferry.
Led by the Norwegian mobility company Kolumbus AS, together with the participation of major players in the industry such as Wärtsilä, Fjellstrand and Servogear, Alconza has developed the design and manufacture of the two propulsion motors for the MS Medstraum. These are two 500 kW permanent magnet synchronous motors at 1380 rpm.
The MS Medstraum will operate in Europe, connecting the Norwegian cities of Stavanger and Hommersåk for passenger transport, acting as a benchmark for the reduction of emissions from this type of vessel.
Three “Double-end” ferries built at the Cemre shipyard (Turkey) were further cases in which Alconza established its position within the permanent magnet motor sector, offering tailor-made solutions and focusing on offering compact and lightweight solutions.
