RESEARCH & OCEANOGRAPHICS

RSS David Attenborough

Delivered in 2021 by the Cammell Laird shipyard for the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) in England, the vessel has icebreaking capability, being operational up to 1 meter thick at 3 knots speed. It also features dynamic positioning capability.

Supply range

  • 2 main propulsion tandems, with 4 motors of 2,750 kW at 140 rpm, with direct shaft coupling, Silent-R rating under DNV and certified with Lloyds Register.

The absence of a gearbox between the motors and the propulsion line makes the system more reliable and silent, as well as more economical from a maintenance point of view.

The delivery of these motors strengthens Alconza’s presence in this vessel segment with such high technical requirements, proving that it has the best technological and productive capabilities to equip this type of vessels with solutions based on rigidly mounted asynchronous motors. This solution is a great advantage over DC motors and elastic mounts, common in research vessels, which make the propulsion package more expensive and complicated.
