Alconza has extensive experience in this type of vessels and works closely with the integrator and designer when sizing the equipment to meet the high ICE requirements. Companies such as Lukoil or Rosmorport have Alconza equipment on their ships. 14 of the world’s leading icebreakers are equipped with our propulsion engines.
Icebreaker or icebreaker-capable ships are ships that usually have a large propulsion capacity. In the increasingly common case of diesel-electric systems they also have a large power plant.
These ships are designed to operate in extreme areas and factors such as safety and reliability are key when selecting the equipment, they incorporate.

AKADEMIK THRYOSNIKOV
The Akademik Tryoshnikov, a Russian diesel-electric research vessel, is the flagship of the Russian Polar Research Institute. It was built at the Admiralty shipyard in St. Petersburg. It has a complex diesel-electric propulsion plant, consisting of three Wärtsilä engines, two 6,300 kW and one 4,200 kW, which drive high-voltage Alconza generators.
NOVORSSIYSK
Belonging to the 21900M project, built by Vyborg Shipyard for “Rosmorport” and delivered in 2016, it is the third in its series (Vladivostok, Murmansk and Novorossiysk). It represented the first non-nuclear icebreaker project over the last 30 years.
ALMIRANTE OSCAR VIEL
Chilean Navy polar vessel currently under construction at the Asmar Shipyard in Talcahuano. She has a total power of 14.5 MW in her diesel-electric propulsion plant, with main propulsion engines supplied by Alconza and directly coupled to the propeller.
